Rubezahl Marienbad Castle Hotel - Hotel History

Built at the top of a verdant hill in the early 20th century by Arnold Heymann, one of the most famous Viennese architects of his time, the “Rubezahl-Marienbad” castle hotel stands in an imposing manner at the place where, according to legend, the “Lord of the Mountains” by the name Rubezahl resided. The mythical giant, whose reputation spans hundreds of years and is rooted in ancient German folkore, has been worshiped for years by the natives of Silesia and Bohemia.

Τhe architectural design of Arnold Heymann was supervised by master craftsman J. Koenig, who together planned the construction of the fairytale castle that would both honour and reflect the magnitude of Rubezahl’s legacy. Apart from the grand castle hotel construction, a 3.5 m tall granite statue of Rubezahl is the centerpiece of the hotel’s garden, paying further homage to the myth.

The architectural style of the castle hotel is an amalgam of all the cultures that embraced Rubezahl’s legend. The first floor of the building displays classical elements that exude elegance and aristocratic flair, while the second conveys a more gothic temperament, featuring towers, donjons, domes and sculptures. Baroque decorative additions to the rooms and expansive windows in avant-garde style altogether compose a perfect architectural ensemble that will bedazzle design aficionados and captivate guests at first sight.

Wrapped in a veil of local legend, steeped in regional folklore fables and tales full of alluring mystique and charming mystery, this fairytale castle hotel has always been a place of exclusivity. Originally it only accepted members of royal families, one of which was the king of England, Edward the 7th. He visited it regularly in order to use this luxurious retreat to isolate himself and be rehabilitated from his passions. Gradually, however, the castle hotel opened its doors to welcome members of various aristocratic circles and important personalities of the time, who chose it for its exceptional environment, and enabled them to combine their holidays with health and wellness treatments.

As the years passed and as the reign of aristocracy waned, the castle hotel received fewer guests thus becoming quieter, until 2008, when it was discovered and resurged by its current owner. Infatuated by its mesmerizing appeal, the current owner put financial and practical difficulties aside and a thorough renovation began, applying new technologies and modern day comforts to the castle hotel. This restoration process marked a new era in its history. The 43 rooms regained their former glory with the added element of modernity throughout, including a comprehensive wellness center, a Roman bath complex and a wine pairing, delectable restaurant. And so the castle hotel was able to reopen, entirely refurbished and revamped to even higher standards.
