The neoclassical town Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) is located in a beautiful valley in West Bohemia, at altitudes between 567-626 m, surrounded by a forest area in a diameter of approximately 20 km. Gifted with unparalleled natural beauty and more than 150 mineral springs, the once small and unknown town of Bohemia, emerged as one of the best spa towns in Europe with healing mineral water, constituting together with Karlovy Vary and Frantiskovy Lazne, the West Bohemian Spa Triangle.
The locals had discovered the healing properties of the mineral sources that emerged from the center of the wooded valley, since the 16th century. Water composition, however, had not been studied until the 18th century, when -according to historical records- Josef Jan Nehr, physician at the monastery Teplá, proceeded with the chemical analysis of the water sources. He soon discovered the beneficial effects they had on human health.
The man responsible for the development of the region was Karel Kaspar Reitenberger, Abbot of the monastery Teplá, who promoted the construction of thermal infrastructures, often against the wishes of other guild members. With the cooperation of brilliant landscape architect, Vaclav Skalnik, beautiful parks were built, and the area became a natural haven of tranquility. The facilities were built in neoclassical style and featured pavilions, fountains and ponds. The area was improved even more after distances were shortened (railroad creation) between Marianske Lazne and other major cities. During the European Golden Age Marienbad had became the premier wellness and therapeutic mineral water drinking center, as well as an important social, cultural and political center of Europe.
Until this day Marienbad remains as one of the best wellness and therapeutic mineral water drinking towns in the world, featuring top infrastructure. About 160 sources located on the outskirts and at least 50 mineral springs in the town, gush healing waters that help treat diseases of the urinary and digestive system, dermatological diseases and respiratory problems.
To get to know the town better, you can take a walk down the narrow paths, you can admire the neoclassical colonnade of 1899, where musical events and performances of the symphonic Orchestra take place, and you can enjoy drinking the water of the central source, which treats kidney diseases. Nearby the colonnade and the singing fountain, you can visit significant monuments, which features busts of Josef Nera and Vaclav Skalnik, the statue of Karl Kaspar Reitenberger and in close distance, the bronze statue of Goethe.
In your wanderings, you will also get to see the Museum of Natural History and Geography, the Memorial of Fryderyk Chopin, the theater, the library, the concert hall, art galleries, theaters, ballrooms and casinos.
The city museum is housed in the oldest preserved building of Marianske Lazne, a fine example of 19th century architecture. It was constructed in 1818 to host the inn “Golden Grape”, for guests. There, also stayed in 1823, the German poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe, as pointed out by the memorial plaque over the entrance. Between 1975 – 1979, the building was renovated and a new single-storey building was built in the yard, featuring a projection room, an auditorium and an additional showroom. The museum is open daily, except Mondays, from 9:30 to 17:30. The permanent exhibition presents the history of the thermal town and the outdoor Geological Park “Johann Wolfgang von Goethe”, spanning 10 hectares of garden next to the museum, refers to the geological past of the region.
In your spare time you can also visit the Roman Gothic style Anglican Church (1879), the Orthodox Church of St. Vladimir, the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption, the Evangelical church, the church of St. Anne and St. Anthony of Padua.
For a wonderful panorama of the city, climb up the hill where the observation tower Hamelika stands for over 150 years. The walk lasts for about 30 minutes, following a marked tourist path which starts from Marianske Lazne. Exciting can also be the tourist rides around the town by a horse-drawn carriage or a tourist train. In this way you can fully enjoy the harmony that comes from viewing the green landscape and the excellent architecture around you.
The Singing Fountain is one of the most famous attractions of Mariánské Lázně and you will find it while touring the city, next to the cloisters of the Hot Spring. The musical fountain started its “magical dance” on April 30th,1986, enchanting visitors of the Thermal town with melodic water choreographic.
The circular stone fountain decorated with a flower sculpture, has more than 250 nozzles, ejecting “dancing” waters to rhythms of classical and contemporary music, while making thousands of combinations of water shapes and moving lights.
The program features 10 different musical compositions, starting every single hour, and is repeated daily throughout the high season, from May to October. Particularly impressive is at night, when it gets illuminated with special effects, combing audio, light and water.

Taking a day trip to Spa Kynzvart is a wonderful way to experience the small thermal town of Kynžvar, home to a castle which was once owned by the Austrian Empire Foreign Minister, Prince von Metternich. Here visitors can admire an interesting exhibition of unique personal items, that once belonged to famous people of that era.
Among other things, you will get to see the shrine of Maria-Antoinette of France, the desk and the chair of Alexander Dumas, one comb of Empress Maria-Teresa of Austria, the charm of the English poet Lord Byron and a box of bullets from the Battle of Waterloo.
Monastery Teplá, in the homonymous town, which is also the cultural center of Western Bohemia, boasts the largest monastic library in the Czech Republic. The Premonstratensian Abbey was founded in 1193 by the rich noble Hroznata, and played an important role in the history of the region, as the rector of it, Karl Kaspar Reitenberger, laid the resort bases that evolved in the thermal town Marienbad (Marianske Lazne).

A visit to the picturesque Bečov nad Teplou is an unforgettable trip which you can take from Rubezahl Marienbad Luxury Historical Castle Hotel & Golf. The main attraction of the town is the baroque castle (built in the early 14th century), which re-opened its gates to visitors, after 11 years of renovations, featuring a priceless treasure of the Czech Republic: The Roman reliquary of St. Maurus (12th cen.), which was discovered under the floor of the chapel, when the World War II was ending, and given to the Bečov castle for exhibition after its conservation-restoration.
